Doctors In Indian Armed Forces

Where do i start? That has always been a dilemma, even while scribbling in my diary!. Okay.. I don't want to bore anybody with my not so good 'story writing skills'. A few words on how I got into it.

It's a dream of a great number of youths to become a doctor. For that one needs to surpass a lot of hurdles starting from your 10th standard performance. Then comes the 11th and 12th and ''the mother of all exams, 'The Pre med Entrance'".

Honestly, i thought that Pre Med Entrance was the toughest, but just had to wait 5 years to prove it wrong! It's the MBBS final exam, which is the toughest of all exams in the country. Just like any other doctor, i passed all that, then was doing my internship, in the famed Govt Medical College, Trivandrum.

One fine morning, sipping a cup of fine tea, I was reading newspaper when my eyes just got hooked in strong bold heading "RECRUITMENT OF SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION OFFICERS IN ARMY MEDICAL CORPS". It was a call for doctors to join the largest voluntary army in the world. The decision came up in no time. Do it. In a day or two, the application was ready, sent by BLUEDART COURIERS. I specify this, because as usual it the last day of receipt of application and it should reach Delhi in 12 hours. By experience, i tell you, Bluedart is the only courier which does that, but at a very high price of Rs 250/- for two A4 size papers in a packet.

I completed my internship, then the great Convocation ceremony. Soon it was all over. The fun, the student life, everything. Now one fine morning, I am a DOCTOR. I was looking for something to do other than sit and study for another year for PG. General Practice was, by then, a boredom for me, unlike many others who just started doing it. I didn't have to think much, as the Compulsory Rural Service call letter was served to me in a few days. I actually was happy with it.In a month, I joined for compulsory rural service in a very difficult rural area. I was well settled there very soon with a good number of private patients, a mass of loving and caring people around me, infact i loved being the demi-God of that village. Life was going on and on. I thought "This is life, of a doctor".There came the greatest ever twist in my life.

The Interview call letter for Armed Forces Medical Services. I was to appear before the interview board by April end, on a specified date.

Okay.. Enough on my life. Let's get into business.

HOW TO APPLY

Every year or twice a year, Army Medical Corps invites application from doctors to join as Short Service Commissioned Medical Officers. Every year they need 100 - 250 doctors to fill the vacancies. An advertisement is floated in all leading newspapers and the official website of Indian Army. Those who are doing their internship also can apply provided they complete it in time, latest by two months after the interview date.

ELIGIBILITY in General
  • Indian National
  • MBBS Degree (House Surgeons can apply provided they complete their internship in time)
  • Normal vision / Corrected vision of 6/6
  • No physical disabilities
  • Prescribed height and weight (see the advertisement)
  • Chest Expansion min 05 cms
  • Female candidates should not be pregnant while enrollment
(for specific medical fitness, see below)

THE INTERVIEW
Interview will be held at Research and Referral Hospital, Delhi. To and fro 'Sleeper class train tickets' can be claimed and will be reimbursed to your account whether you get through or not, whether you have traveled in any other means also.

TIPS FOR INTERVIEW - GENERAL

  • Be in a neat and clean dress (No need of wearing a suit or a tie or anything unusual. But just be well dressed. Please don't come in your baggies and slippers and shorts! For God's sake. (Believe me..There was a guy in shorts!!)
  • Have a neat haircut ( Not reqd to be in army cut, you are not yet selected)
  • Be there a day or two earlier.
  • Go to the R&R hospital a day or two before your interview. Candidates who come out of the interview hall will be sitting in another hall. You can sit with them. Ask for questions asked to them. You'll be accustomed to Instructions for candidates too. (I did this, so did many other guys who joined with me). It really helps with the interview. You may find one or two of your batchmates too there. (I found five!)
  • Try staying close to the interview location. Delhi traffic is really not trustworthy. You may get into hours of traffic block and miss your slot. Army is very particular on that. Be there in time.
  • There is a Western Air Command very close to R&R hospital, actually, the next compound. If you have any contact with somebody there, try getting a guest room there. (I'm grateful to my friend Dr Srikanth and his brother for arranging that for me. We all stayed together, roamed together, attended interview together , got recruited together and now we work together.)
  • Delhi will be steaming hot in March, April, May and June. Really cold in October, November, December, January and February. So gear up accordingly. (I went in summer, and it was hot as hell. Had to drink 5 litres of water to survive)
  • DO NOT TRY TO INFLUENCE THE INTERVIEW BOARD. it'll fire back. Armed Forces is not such a thing to mess up with. They really don't care much about politicians.
  • On the Interview date, if you have done two days of "listening" to the post interview candidates, you'll be uber cool.
THE INTERVIEW BOARD

  • Comprises of Army Doctors from many specialities, not all. It depends on the day and time.
  • One thing for sure is you'll have a Medical Specialist, Surgical Specialist, Pediatrician and most importantly a Community Medicine specialist. Army is really bothered about your common sense and skills in Social and Preventive Medicine. Be ready for that.Don't worry I'll tell you how to tackle that.
  • Usual tips- When you walk in, you'll find an officer sitting at the farthest end of the oval/rectangular table. He's the seniormost officer. Wish him the time of the day, no need to wish everybody. If there is a lady, wish her first and then the seniormost.
  • Do not sit as soon as you enter, even if you may find your chair empty. They'll definitely offer you a seat. Say a Thank you.
  • Sit with a straight spine, arms resting on your laps. avoid placing your elbows on the table.
  • Avoid using hand signs while answering.
  • Do not beat around the bush. Answer to the point. If you don't know the answer, say "Sorry, can i answer another question"?.
  • Remember. They are not sitting there to assess your depth in Medical Sciences, but the way of answering and your presence of mind. An average knowledge of a student who passes out from a Govt Medical College is more than enough.
  • Book your return ticket on a date one or two days after your interview. You'll have to stay back for Medical Fitness tests, once you are selected which might take a day or two.
INTERVIEW - TOPICS THAT YOU SHOULD BE KNOWING
( I deliberately said "Knowing" because you can't "STUDY" Medical Sciences for an interview. It's that vast. )
  • Emergency Medicine including first aid and CPCR (latest)
  • BLS and ACLS guideline (latest)
  • Management of Burns, Electric Shock, Fracture, Trauma, Head Injury, Injury to Spine
  • Few medical topics like Status Asthmaticus, Myocardial Infarction, Hepatitis, Infectious diseases- usual ones. No need to read about Brucellosis, Borreliosis, Q fever etc.
  • Cardiac Murmurs and their causes. No need to go in depth
  • All National Programmes including Immunisation, TB, Malaria, NVBDCP(very important), RCH, Health for all etc
  • They'll ask you things pertaining to your state/region. They get transferred to all places. So don't bluff. They definitely have first hand knowledge on the epidemiology. So use common sense and read about diseases according to epidemiology of your area.
  • Read on questions asked on previous days (That's another reason why i asked you to be there a day or two earlier)
RESULTS
  • Results will be announced the same day, soon after your batch of ten comes back from interview hall.
  • Those selected will have to stay back till you finish up with your forms, inspection of your documents and verification of credentials.
SELECTION TO DIFFERENT SERVICES- ARMY, NAVY and AIR FORCE

Army Medical Corps is common to all the three services. So you can be commissioned to any of these three services. Selection criteria differs. There are bogus reports on something called a "Rank List" whereby first few will get Air Force, then Navy , then Army in that order. Totally wrong. They'll try to give your first posting at your home station (for a few months). Just to make you comfortable until you learn about the service. So your commission does depends, upto an extend, the service hospital that's available near your hometown. (I had a Naval Hospital near my hometown, and I got Navy, so did some of my friends)

MEDICAL FITNESS TESTS

Unlike others who are recruited, doctors do not have to undergo Physical Tests, but have to undergo a battery of medical tests. Those candidates who pass the interview will be taken to Armed Forces Clinic, New Delhi. You're now in the place where The President of India gets his/her treatment. Following things are examined and if found abnormal will result in disqualification, either permanent or temporary.
  • Permanent disqualification - Candidates who are permanently disqualified, can apply/appeal for re-inspection in the nearest service hospital after payment of a certain amount (Rs 200-400)
  • Temporary disqualification- Candidates who are temporarily unfit are asked to review before another medical board in the nearest service hospital after 42 days (free of cost). If found to be fit, shall be commissioned, else made permanently unfit.

  1. I am posting replies to few queries emailed to me by an aspirant. This might be useful to others too.

    1. Will the doctors also have to undergo the same training as the other jawans have to?

Ans : Not really. But you'll have 02 months of Army training including Physical, Combat and other administrative trainings. For Navy and Air force, there'll be an additional 2-3 months of their own training.

    ReplyDelete
  2. 2. After how many years will we be eligible for the pg course and will we get the salary paid during that period or only the stipend

Ans : If you remain in Short Service, then you'll be eligible for DNB after 04 years and MD,MS after 08 years( on execution of a bond of total service of 14 years including what you have already put up) . If you get into permanent commission, you'll be eligible for PG after 04 years. YOU'LL BE PAID FULL SALARY AND OTHER BENEFITS IN ACCORDANCE TO YOUR RANK. That's the best part of it. While doing PG you'll be earning at least 80,000 PM with all benefits.

    ReplyDelete
  3. 3. Will we be posted in borders during the tenure?

Ans : Welcome to Army Medical Corps. If you are in Army, SURE SHOT.. YOU WILL BE. At least for the first two years after your training. In Navy, you'll go to ships as medical officer and in Air Force, you'll be in peripheral posts. Young bloods are reqd in borders and in Ships.

    ReplyDelete
  4. 4. I love to be in navy . How will they do the division?

Ans : It's not your choice that matters. It's the requirement of Armed Forces that matters, not only here in case of recruitment, but also in case of transfers and postings. The only thing that matters is THEIR requirement. Of course YES, after a Hard area posting they'll put you in peace area for another peaceful tenure

    ReplyDelete
  5. 5. Will the salary be the same during the whole tenure or will it increases?

Ans : Salary hikes are every year incremental in the same rank, and it increases with promotions and as per Central Govt hike in Daily allowances. In the last four years, salary hike was nearly 165% due to the 6th Pay Commission. The next Pay commission is in 2016

    ReplyDelete
  6. 6. where exactly will we be posted like in any metropolian city or some other small towns?

Ans : Don't come here for self benefit only!! This is called a SERVICE because it is a SERVICE. In Navy, you will only be posted to big cities as most of them are along the coast. In Army, NO WAY. In AIr Force, may be yes. Navy has very few stations which are remote. But Army has lot many, perhaps most of their stations are remote

    ReplyDelete
  7. 7. I have no idea how many people are in draw for the 120 posts available. do you have any idea on it ?

Ans : Not really. But in 2006, they needed 380 doctors, the number of people appeared for interview were only 240 and they filtered out 180 from it. In 2010 they needed 280 doctors, close to 1200 appeared for the interview and they took 180 from it. In 2011, they needed only 100 doctors, close to 900 appeared and they took 70+ out of it. So in a statistical way of looking at it, the number of vacancies are coming down, the filtering is tougher and number of people appearing are on the increase. So cross your fingers and give a shot.

  8. 8. Will they provide a hostel for our stay once commissioned or a good apartment?

Ans : "HOSTEL"??? That's a degraded term. You are an officer. If you are single, you'll stay in Officers' Mess which is of high quality stay. If married, you'll get a two bedroom house/ apartment in your area of posting. If houses are not vacant, you'll be granted House Rent Allowance according to cities (Lowest being 3300/- and highest being 13000/- per month). In most of naval stations, you'll get a waterfront apartment which is superb.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 9. how will be the life there :) will it be very strict?

Ans: My friend. The core of Armed Forces is DISCIPLINE. Without which it is non existent. In Mess or in anywhere in the world you are, you'll be guided by rules and regulations within which you'll learn to enjoy life in a matter of months. It's unlike a college hostel where you enjoy in an irresponsible way. Here you live in an Officers' Mess. An Officer is a Gentleman in all respects, at all times, in all points of view. So you drink every night, but you drink responsibly. You dance after drinking, but with your clothes on and in a civilized manner. You have Health Club, Golf Club, Swimming pools and what not.. But you have to conduct yourself as an officer. The Stars/Stripes that you carry on your shoulder may weigh physically in grams, but the responsibilty that they carry is enormous and that is what makes you different from others

    ReplyDelete
  10. 10. Once we are commissioned can we quit in the middle?

Ans: Good Question. If you have a doubt in mind, NEVER JOIN. Yes, you can quit, quit on your country and it's most deemed service. But it's very difficult and only for exceptional cases/ reasons. And it'll take at least 01 year to process your outgoing.

'COMMISSION' is not a simple thing. THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA, THE SUPREME COMMANDER OF ARMED FORCES, SIGNS ON A PAPER WHICH SAYS YOUR NAME AND RANK ADDRESS, AND GRANTS YOU COMMISSION.

The President's sign/ grant is not so easily available and you cannot quit so easily from that responsibility.

We are lucky to enter as doctors. In all other cases, the Road to become a Commissioned Officer is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. And since it is so hard earned, they never think of quitting.

    SO DON'T JOIN TO QUIT.

In case of such extremely compassionate grounds you might get an exemption and granted release.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 11. How much percent quota will be there in army hospitals for ex servicemen candidates?

Ans: I am not sure of this. But one thing. If you have put 50 % of hard work required to get a PG outside, you can get thru , for sure, as the total number of seats are more and competition is less.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 12. I am 22yr old nw.Is my decision of joining defence is premature or shall i prepare for pg entrance for an year and then give it a go?

Ans: It's upto you. If you want to join defence any time in life, make it at the earliest. Because the only thing that matters in Armed Forces is your rank and seniority. Somebody who joined 1 day before you will be your senior and will have more benefits and a better profile than you, even if you are 100 times better than him. The skills and other capabilities are recogonised only after 10 years of service when you will have selection process for further promotions.
So, decide whether you want to be in forces or not. IF YES, MAKE IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

    ReplyDelete
  13. 13. As most of my family members are in airforce,so will i be given a preference to serve IAF. iam very particular about IAF?

Ans: NO is the answer. But just try it. You might get Airforce as well. Equal chances.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 14. As u said. After 4 yrs of SSC, you are eligible for DNB and after 8 years MD/MS.But SSC is only for 5 years then how can you do MD/MS?

Ans: Good question. SSC is a contract where the initial contract is for 5 years. Following which you can either take PC or extend SSC to another 5 years and then further extend it to another 4 more years, total 14 years.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 15. What is the prospect of getting pg seat through SSC in forces? and is it mandatory to serve 14 yrs thereafter?

Ans: Prospect is as in any other place. As a Post graduate, you'll be a specialist and depending on your specialisation, you'll be posted in various hospiatls or places according to service require emnts. You'll get some thing called a SPecialist's Pay and Allowances. And will be selected for further Super/Sub Specialisation. AND IT IS MANDATORY TO COMPLETE 14 years of service.
AT 8th year of service, you get PG. DO PG for 3 years. Then there's only 3 more years left to complete your tenure of 14 years.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 16. I dont have a medical background,so will it be a good decision to join forces? I shouldnt be repenting later.

Ans: You ARE a DOCTOR, and hence has got all the medical background as somebody with 10 generations of doctors at home. The decision to join forces is a bit cranky. Nobody can force you to do it, not even lure. So take it by yourself and be happy. Look at all prospects of life in and out of service and then decide.
You're at a much better position to know things than i was while giving my interview for Armed Forces. Doesn't have anybody in Forces to ask or to discuss about.

    Take Care. Regards

    1. Hi.

The answer to your question is "NO".

In Armed Forces, there is a role for everyone to play. You are a Medical Officer. Your part is to save lives. If you fight in the frontline and lose your life, that'll endanger lives of many jawans who could've been saved by you. So NO is the answer.

BUT--- There's an exception. There're medical officers in Counter Insurgency areas who go out for fighting in frontline while patrolling.

    1. The answer to your first question is already in the blog. For the second question., The starting salary will be 50,000/- . It will go up for few promotions and THEN COME DOWN AFTER A WHILE. But you will be a Brigadier of General or Admiral then. You don't need money to run your home.

Indian President's salary is 1.5 lacs. !!! There are professionals who earn double and triple and more than that. BUT President is President and so is General and Admiral.

      So be cool..

  20. respected sir...
i am doing my final year now mbbs...
i wanted to know whether i can apply for armed forces medical corps before finishing my internship....or i can apply only after i complete it.

and suppose if i can join before my internship ....will i have to work for the army at that one year tenure?

    waiting for your reply..

    thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi Vivek,

You can apply while doing internship OR do the internship in Armed Forces, provided they invite applications. You'll work as a Commissioned Officer as Liuetenant in Army (One Rank less than Captain) for ONE year with all benefits, and after the internship you'll be promoted to a Captain (AMC). It is a good option, but Army Medical Corps should invite applications as such. You may try applying.

In case of candidates who are UNDERGOING internship, you'll be given the required joining period. On completion of internship, you'll join directly as Captain and equivalents in Navy and Airforce.

    1. Hi Dhanush,

You cannot select a College in Armed Forces for internship. If you happen to get it, then it's good. Army will be happy to absorb you as you already have exposure to their system of working.

In NORMAL circumstances, Interns are recruited into forces as Lieutenant (AMC) where you'll work as proper Commissioned Army officer and draw the salary of the same for 1 year. And you don't need another interview. You're already their Officer.

  24. hello sir..

sir ,i dont understand. your saying we have to work as proper commissioned officer ...what i wanted to know is where will we complete that one year of intership ....at our respective college where we studied..? or in the army??

because in my college if we have to do our internship anywhere other than our college then we have to pay a certain amount to our college to let us do the internship elsewhere.

suppose we have to complete our 1 year internship in our respective college then how are we entitled to earn the salary of our rank when we havent worked in the army for that one year..??

its like we are being paid for doing nothing.

    pls clarify

    1. Hi Vivek,

You'll be commissioned and HAVE TO WORK IN ARMED FORCES HOSPITALS during the internship. This needs a No Objection Certificate from your college which you'll get after you pay the penalty for not doing internship there.

Hope i cleared your worry on getting paid for doing nothing.

  26. hi, this is Ravi
i have a question. i cant seem to find any details about flight surgeons. is there any such thing as a flight surgeon in Indian Air Force, or the Naval Aviation, like in the USAF or US Navy, where doctors also get to fly as observers with the pilot in command?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Ravi,

There "WERE" flight surgeons in Indian Navy as well. One Surgeon Lieutenant is in history of Indian Navy to be the first flight surgeon to fly as observer in a two men fighter craft. It's been discontinued as it's of no use to place a doctor too in risky areas and get him killed in case of an accident.

Remember "Adventure is a part and Parcel of Armed Forces, But Adventure is not our aim. We're here to protect the nation's boundaries and her integrity".

SO well thought by some Admiral to put an end to Flight Surgeons, instead we will be at the flight deck when the flight takes off, ready for any mishaps.

You have cleared almost all my doubts regarding SSC commissioning for Doctors in the Armed Forces.
1 question I have left is,

If my Wife is also in the Armed forces..is there a provision for both of us to be posted at the same place?

    1. Hi Sijo,

There "IS" a provision to post you both together and many a times, they sincerely do it too. BUT.. It all depends on service exigencies.

For example, if they need a Medic at a Highly operational area and Ladies can't be posted there, then you go there and your good lady stays back.

So it's not mandatory that you get Spouse Postings, But there's is a provision.

Some of my batchmates are enjoying the provision as we speak.

You got to start your internship to be eligible for applying. In case the Armed Forces are recruiting PRE-INTERNS, they would specify in their advertisements.

Once you start your internship, apply and appear for interview. If you pass the interview, apply for shifting of internship college to AFMC.

    1. Hi Sid,

If you want to continue and take PC, join as a graduate and take PC in here. It's easy to get one and easy to learn too. Your period of study will be considered as service. You'll get SALARY during study and not just some meager stipend.

SSC guys will get PC only after 7 years of service, but if you take PC,you can attempt for PG after 4 years. Otherwise, both write the same NEET exam.So no difference between PC and SSC

NO is the answer. You're liable to follow the regulations and hence cannot leave service before extermination of your initial engagement of 5 years, hence you'll not be allowed to appear for NEET PG before 4 years. Even if you appear WITHOUT permission, and even if you pass the exam, you'll NOT BE PERMITTED to leave and join the PG course.

      Be very clear on this.

Good question. As a SSC officer you'll be allowed to do ONLY one of those DNB or MD/MS. As in Forces, DNB= MD/MS. Further you'll be granted STUDY LEAVE for pursuance of your career in between 10-14 years of service, where you'll have to secure a seat in CIVIL institutions and Army will pay you to study there and give you leave for a maximum of 2 years.

You have to be BELOW COMPLETION OF 30 years of age at the end of your 2 years of service.

So most probably, i'd say NEGATIVE.

But if you do a PG straightaway, you gat a fair chance. Do a PG @ 28 years of age. By the time you complete PG, you're 31. Join Army and complete 2 years of service. That'll make it 33-34. For PG candidates, it's 35 years for PC.

So.. You got a good chance..

Home station is a total NO NO. There's no Guarantee at all that you'll be posted near your home station except for the initial 3-10 months. So if you've stay near home for domestic reasons, i'd suggest you don't join.

Your UNCORRECTED VISION in the worst eye can be as low as 6/60. The CORRECTED VISION should be 6/6. LASIK surgery done 01 year back is acceptable. Still, i'd say no one can differentiate between a LASIK done 3 months back and 01 year back. So you need at least 03 months gap between your Correction surgery and appearance for interview.

I had finished my MBBS in 2011 from International University, St Kitts ie a foriegn university .I want to knw if i can apply for the armed forces ,it`s a dream for me but don`t know whether i am eligible.I am asking that after i clear the MCI screening test, whether i will be able to join it.I cleared my Final MBBS in second attempt and have asked for a certificate too in the university(want to know, what all things the certificate needs to have ie college seal and dean`s signature ??).And one last quest..,there are some command hospitals and MH`s name given in the list of hospitals for internship for us( foriegn Medical Graduates).Whether i can join in them and get a direct entry in SSC ....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Sudeep,

      1) Once you clear MCI screening test, you're good to attend interview, PROVIDED your University degree is RECOGNIZED by MCI.

      2) Being frank to you, ONCE YOUR ATTEMPT CERTIFICATE SAYS "SECOND", you're less preferred. BUT by rule you can attempt the interview and give a try. Upto two chances are allowed.

      3) The certificate needs to be FROM THE UNIVERSITY, NOT THE COLLEGE. So it should contain, the University seal, stamp and signature of VC/Exam COntroller/ authority. NOT YOUR COLLEGE DEAN.

      4) NOPE. Doing an internship in any of these MH/Navy/Airforce hospitals will not help you, as that contract is only for ONE YEAR. After completion, you're as good as any other candidate. I would say, that can harm you too, as exposure to patients as an intern is LESS in Service hospitals compared to other govt institutions.

And there's no direct entry OTHER THAN SSC.

    1. Hi Anush,

      1. Daily routine depends on your posting area. In field areas, it's never delineated. You're on duty whenever they need you. But in hospitals, the day ends at 1400h.

      2. You'll get 2 months proper Army training at Lucknow. Further, you need not go for regular drills and all. But mind you, Army pays you to keep your health. You do what they say and you'll be young even at the age of 50.

      3. If you are married, you'll get accommodation with family.

      4. Night duties is once in 10-15 days. At field areas, it depends on current situation.

      5. If you're married, you'll get a house and then parents also can stay with you. In case of unmarried also, you can, but need a special permission to stay outside.

      6. Super-specialty can be done out of Indian Armed forces. You'll have to apply after your specialty for permission to apply for CIVIL EXAMS. Then appear for DM or MCh or whatever. Write the exam and pass it. Army will give you full paid 2 years study leave.

It's your choice to join before PG or after. Candidates after PG have a better chance to get PC.

PG exam is NEET itself inside armed forces. You need to come inside 50 Percentile to qualify. Once you just qualify, you'll get any PG you want as the competition will be very less inside.

BUT BEWARE. HERE YOU WORK AND STUDY. WHEREAS YOUR FRIENDS WILL BE SITTING AT HOME AND STUDYING 24 hours. SO You need to put some extra effort to get inside the 50 percentile.

So You can decide. It's not easy. But easier than outside for sure.

Yes, I had mentioned that. It is through DNB CET. But counseling is INTERNAL depending on the number of seats. So you'll get better options than outside.

THERE IS NO PREFERENCE OF PC OVER SSC. Actually PC officers seldom appear for DNB because then they'll be denied of PG chance for atleast another 8 years.

In armed forces, All Doctors are first INDUCTED TO ARMY and then divided to Air force and Navy. All Medical Officers come in ARMY MEDICAL CORPS. You can be asked to change into Army Navy or Airforce uniform in case of emergency.

THERE'S NO DISCRETION between Army, Navy and Airforce.

    1. Hi Sanjay,

My regards to your father. The chances of PC depends on requirement of Armed Forces and nothing else. Those in Army has got more chances of PC than Navy just because of sheer numbers. Also Army ACRs are much better marked than Navy.

At an average 20% SSC get PC. One more factor applies that how many candidates apply. In my batch of Navy Medical Offciers only 3 OUT of 24 applied for PC. All the three got. ie 100%.

So one can never say. Still if you can manage good ACRs , you're good. It just depends on ACRs and some Medical Knowledge checked during your interview.

AFMC is completely out of the scope itself. That'll never affect SSC officers' chances.

    1. Hi Romi,

The total number of people appearing from AFMS are very less compared to those from outside. Once you clear NEET ie come in 50 percentile, then you may even get Radiology PG as there are very less people inside writing and clearing it every year.

If you still are so sceptical about PG, and PG is your only reason to join Armed Forces, I would say DO NOT JOIN. You may get disappointed.

    1. Hi Romi,

Okay. In NEET exam, to QUALIFY, you need to come in 50 PERCENTILE. ie IF 100 people write the exam, top 50 will qualify. Even if the mark difference between first rank and 50th rank guy is 01.
So once you come in first 50 % of people, you qualify. Then you apply in the corresponding Army Hospital for your PG and a separate rank list is made. You get to choose according to your rank amongst army candidates.

      Hope your doubt is cleared

      1. In counter insurgency areas, doctors carry arms while patrolling. Otherwise, NO. Irrespective of your posting, you'll be taught to use all weapons.

      2. No special security guards unless you command a hospital or be a general officer

      3. Helper/Sahayaks as per your entitlement in case you go higher up in rank.

    1. Hi Sourabh,

Yes. You're unfit. For the simple reason because once your training starts, chances of your shoulder to dislocate is very high. Once that happens in the first one year of service when you're in probation period, they'll board you out of service.
      So better not apply. Sorry.

    3. Hi Sourabh,

If operated in 2005, you're fit for the cause. No issues. Tell them about the surgery and please bring the relevant documents of surgery. They will check you for further internal derangement.

You should've told me about the surgery initially. Anyways, you'll be fit. Please don't forget to bring your medical documents. Because any surgery done 1 year back, if the scar is okay, then you're fit for the cause.

  70. Sir,

Thank you for this wonderful post. I am about to join a surgery residency program in the US and will finish general surgery in 7 years. I may pursue a fellowship program there as well, which will take me another 2-3 yrs.

I wish to join the Indian Armed Forces when I get back from the US. My question is regarding specialty surgical services and opportunities for me to use my specialty surgical training here. I request you to enlighten me about the same.

    Thanking you,

    Terence

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Terence,

Please don't join. Once you do your fellowship and be a specialty surgeon, you'll need daily practice which Indian Armed Forces cannot afford to give you in the initial period of 2 years. Then you'll be posted to Specialty centers. By then you'd have lost a lot of practice.

SO my recommendation is Don't Join.

If you're still convinced to join, then be ready to be in a normal primary center for first 2 years. Then you MIGHT get a chance to work in specialty center. That too is a "MIGHT". You might as well be asked to work as a normal general surgeon. So make a wise decision, i can only recommend.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hi Awadesh,

Your call letter will reach you at least 01 month in advance. If your call letter has not yet reached, then your interview might not be in May, but in June. Army interviews only 10 batches of 10 each a day, which makes it 100/ day at the maximum. Many a times they do only 50/ day. If there are lot of applicants, the interview schedule will be in months time. SO don't worry.

And you cannot contact them for this matter. As it is their sole perogative to send or not to send a call letter.

Tell your post office too to keep an eye on such a post as it comes in normal REGISTERED MAIL (ON India Govt Service). So thinking that it might be govt thing, postal dept also takes it less seriously.

    Do check it.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hi Chakravarty,

INA? You mean Indian Armed Forces?. In case of medical officers, the initial tenure is 5 years. You can leave with Ex Servicemen Status, but without a pension and Contributory health scheme. You still can avail Hospital OPD facilities, but not admission and surgeries. Otherwise it's all the same.

Further if you want to continue, you have to extend your service by another 5 years and then by another 4 years, so a total of 14 years. Until you do 20 years of service, you're not eligible for Pension.

You can take a printout of your email and go for the interview in case of not receiving the call letter by post.

Indian Postal service is a main cause of delay in call letters. So Army also started relying on emails, eventhough they're not a secure means of communication.

  79. hi,
is it true that they usually reject private college students? If this is true then i must say that all private colleges especially the south ones are not that bad. There are many govt. medical colleges which are in pathetic condition. So did you face such kind of question like are u from a pvt or govt. college? I dont know how to react to this question.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Hi Ashuthosh,

Yes. They have a leniency towards doctors from Govt Colleges. I also got the same question, so did almost all. If I am sitting there to recruit, I too will ask the same question.

Reasons: 1) Govt colleges, however pathetic they "seem physically", the exposure is tremendous. You play with clinical cases. Whereas in private colleges, patient load is limited to bed number and paying patients seldom allow you to examine them twice. Once they come to know that you're a student, then they have a different attitude altogether.

    2) Even in UG Entrance exam, the top rank holders select govt colleges and further when seats are filled you go for private. This is a truth. So If i've a doctor who has a history of performing well, why shouldn't i prefer him?

So overall keeping in mind, the idea of getting a better doctor to my services, I will take the the one who has a history of good performance and the one with more clinical exposure.

    Expect this question in interview.

I don't think you have a choice in answering them. EIther You ARE from a govt college Or you ARE NOT. So answer accordingly.

    1. Hi Kavita,

The answer is NO. The term "Permanent posting" in Armed Forces is for any posting which lasts more than 06 months. Till then it can be a temporary duty. Permanent posting is maximum upto 3 years at a place and in case of any extreme compassionate grounds, may be extended to another 01 year.

In case your spouse is working with Central Govt, you can ask for a spouse posting with him wherever he moves, as they also will have transfers.

So decide whether to join or not depending on your condition.

  82. Hi, thank you for your prompt reply. But i quite do not agree with your 2nd point that all good performers in ug entrance go to govt. colleges. A 3000 rank student gets into govt. college while a 400 rank student is forced to take a pvt. college. The reason you might be knowing. Anyways that means it is better not to attend the interview by pvt. college students as I have heard that the only thing one gets is humiliation by the board.
    Regards.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hi Ashutosh,

That too is a valid point for sure.

In India that happens with each and every thing. IIT, NIT, AIIMS, no govt institution is free from it. So does most of the jobs too.

But it's not equal to say that students from pvt medical colleges should not attend the interview. It all depends on the individual's time and space. If he/she happens to perform well in interview than his/her Govt College counterparts, definitely he/she has an upper hand.

So no conclusions, but it's a truth that the preference of the board goes to govt college students.

  84. Hello Sir!
I would like to obtain advice from you on regards of my seemingly long query.
I have read and understood your blog about getting selected and working in the Army.
Sir I have completed my Internship from a Government Medical College in Karnataka in March 2013. It was only yesterday that I received the email of the call-letter calling me for the interview and medical test scheduled on May 23.
I need clarification on these lines:

    1. I had opted for the compulsory rural service. But, due to discrepancies in posting the vacancies, I was allotted a PHC where there was already a doctor working, for which the DHFWS, Bangalore has requested me to wait till June for re-counseling me. As a result, the No-Objection Certificate from my college and the Permanent Registration Certificate from the university are getting delayed. When clarified at the phone number mentioned in the call-letter, I was assured that my Provisional Registration Certificate holds good during the verification session.
With this regard, is it possible to apply to performing my rural service duty in the Army/Navy/Air Force?

    2. Sir, I have an obese habitus. Current body weight is 88kgs, and its mostly in the range of 85-90kgs. My height is 170cms. Isn't this more than the 20% relaxation? So do I stand a chance?
I've already put myself on a strict diet and workout regime. However, (sounds funny, but I'm curious), I would be grateful to get weight-reduction advice from you, Sir.

    3. Sir, you said skin problems are deemed Permanently Unfit. I'm having extensive folliculitis (prickly heat) over the back. Will this be a serious issue?

Sir, I would be enormously grateful to you if you could clear all these doubts and booking my train tickets from Bangalore to New Delhi depends solely on your words. If I could be aware of my disqualification grounds beforehand, there is no meaning in planning anything further.
    Kindly guide me Sir.

  85. Hi Manu,

Nice to hear that you are interested in Army Medical Services. Getting to your queries.

    1) All Govt institutions, by rule, are to give a NOC for joining Armed Forces. This issue of Compulsory Rural Service has come up several times, every time, the rule I mentioned held good.

    2) Your provisional registration is enough to see you through the interview schedule. Further you'll be asked to send the Permanent Registration details to DGAFMS later. In case you are selected,You can show your original certificate when you join the respective Army/Navy/ Airforce hospital.

    3) If you qualify the interview, wait for their joining letter. Apply for NOC in your university. Apply for Permanent Reg certificate also, along with the CALL LETTER attested copy.
The university is bound to release you for the service of the nation.

    4) You are beyond acceptable limits w.r.t weight. But OVERWEIGHT/OBESITY without any other underlying causes are TEMPORARILY UNFIT. You will be given another 42 days to reduce your weight to reqd standard. So start from now and keep on continuing the effort.

    5) There are hundreds of weight reducing tips all over the internet. Please find a suitable one. From my side i can give you one advice. HAVE A DAILY ROUTINE OF EXERCISE AND STICK TO IT.

    6) Folliculitis over the back is not a problem.

So decide on booking tickets and let me know.

    All The Best

    Regards

    ReplyDelete
  86. Sir, you provided me all the information I needed. Thanks so much!
Yes Sir, I'll be booking the tickets.
But, Sir, you said I should be there 2 days prior to the date of my interview, which is May 23, at 8 AM. So when should I be Delhi, in order to familiarize with the Base Hospital and vicinities?
Will it be easy to find a stay for a week for me and my parents somewhere near the Base Hospital? I do not have any contacts in the Western Air Command Sir.
And also Sir, I'm unmarried and my parents would be coming with me. Sir, after the interview and medical checkup, during my tenure in the Armed Forces, will I be provided accomodation along with my parents?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Hi Manu,

This time of the year, there will be no vacancy in any of those guest houses available there.

Did you say BASE HOSPITAL? or R&R (Research and Referral) hospital??

Let me know which one. Both are 10 km apart from each other. R&R is closer to Western Air Command.

Sorry that I cannot help you with accommodation. Armed Forces will not provide you any until you are commissioned. So you have to arrange one on your own.

Going with parents is good. They also can enter the security premises and be with you for the interview.

The area is mostly occupied with Army and further the airport is close. You will get an accommodation near the airport. R&R is on the highway no 8. So not much of a traffic problem in case you stay close to airport side.

Psychiatry is a good specialty to be in AFMS hospitals. In the initial 1-2 years, irrespective of your PG, you'll work as GDMO/general physician.

Then you'll be posted to a hospital where you have a Department. There are no Mental Hospitals in armed forces.

Actual posting may be after or before the training period. You may come for training from your actual posting too. Nothing in that is laid down as a procedure. The generally followed trend in ARMY is posting after training, in NAVY is posting before/after training, in Airforce is after training. But not followed strictly to any extend.

After selection you'll be posted to a Navy./Army/Air force hospital where you'll be working for 06 months to one year. Then your training commences in between this first posting or after this first posting.

Have you received your Interview Call Letter? If yes, then you are fit to appear for interview. If No, then you're not.

In case Army feels that YOU have to have permanent registration, they will email YOU. Don't panic. Your case is different from your friend's. And if they send such a letter, then nothing can be done, other than appear for the next interview after getting your reg number.

Usually you'll get time to send them copy of perm reg after interview.

It depends on case to case and person who is evaluating eligibility.

      Regards

    1. Hi Avinash,

As per rules COLOR BLINDNESS is PERMANENT UNFIT. But if undetected during medical test, some people do get recruited. That's a fault in the system. If you hide any medical condition which is of permanent/ genetic in nature, and that condition gets detected later, there are provisions of court martial too. Because before medical test, you'll be asked to write your past medical history and sign under it.

From my opinion, you're ELIGIBLE, but MEDICALLY UNFIT.

    2. Hi Dr Hussain,

Primary uniform is same for Gentlemen and Ladies. Full trousers with half sleeved shirt with cap. In combat camouflage uniform for field area, which is also worn on 1-2 days a week in peace areas, is full sleeved shirt with full trousers and boots and cowboy type HAT.

      There are special uniforms too.

For ladies, SAREE can be worn, while during pregnancy and with certain uniform combination, but not always. For PARADE and other drills, you HAVE TO BE IN NORMAL UNIFORM.

  108. Hi,
My query is with regards to after selection process. In case after being selected in interview and going through medical tests one decides not to join services, then are they considered again in future interviews? or are such candidates who rejected joining once blacklisted? This stands case with me as in case selected I am desperate to join but some important personal reason might make me to step back which i cannot predict now?
other query is can you tell where can be the likely postings for a specialist in psychiatry in case selected in airforce? where can one find a list of hospitals governed by airforce/navy/army?

    1. Hi Dr Aniket,

If after selection, you decide not to join, you are "blacklisted" as you call it. You are not allowed to attend further interviews.
      This is the rule.

Notwithstanding this fact, I have seen specialists apply again and getting through. This is not a hard and fast rule. So if you are a specialist and they need you, the rule might be relaxed.

list of Indian Naval Hospital: http://indiannavy.nic.in/miscellaneous/medical-services

List of Air Force Hospitals : http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Units/Others/287-Medical.html

List of army hospitals are too vast to describe.

As a psychiatry specialist you can be posted to any of these hospitals. Presently not all hospitals have this speciality. The list cannot be disclosed in a public site.

Read Naval hospital list to find out theirs. It's given in their website.
